Russian national team returned with medals from the 5th Baltic Olympiad of School Students in geography

From 26 June to 29 June 2018, the 5th Baltic Olympiad of School Students in geography took place in Valmiera (Latvia), where young Russian geographers competed with peers from Belarus, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland and Estonia. As a result, Muscovite Alen Kospanov was awarded one of three gold medals. Katarina Mechnikova and Olga Bogdanova (both Moscow) won silver awards. Bronze medals were awarded to Mikhail Selyugin (Perm) and Vyacheslav Bogolyubsky (Chelyabinsk).In addition, we took the absolute first place in the team championship. The Olympiad competition program consisted of theoretical questions, practical tasks (in biogeography, eco-geology, geomorphology, urban geography, mapping, etc.) and multimedia quizzes. What is more, School Students did all tasks in English. Deputy Dean of the Faculty of Geography Nikita A. Mozgunov, Leading research associate of Economic and Russian Social Geography Department Pavel L. Kirillov and Associate Professor of Orel State University Dmitry V. Bogachev led the team. The profile coach in mapping was the graduate of the Department of Mapping and Geoinformatics, Director of mapping in the company "Navitel" Pavel L. Platonov. At the international Olympiads in geography, Russian team forms from the winners and prizewinners of All-Russian Olympiad of School Students. Most of them will become students of Moscow State University this year. Next year the Baltic Olympiad of School Students in geography will be held in Russia for the first time. Competitions among young geographers will be taken place in Kaliningrad. Competitions of young geographers from six countries traditionally precede the "big" International Olympiad in Geography (iGeo), which will be held in Quebec (Canada) in July-August this year.
